CoD: World at War Online Beta Rundown
Posted by Skizelli on Sunday, October 12th, 2008 @ 5:56 AMI got my hands on a beta key last night thanks to my brother James, so I thought I’d offer some information about the game.
Think CoD4 in a WWII setting. Some will find this appealing while others will be turned off by it. Not only is it reminiscent of CoD4 in many ways, but it has a lot of new features to offer as well. One such feature is the attack dogs that you can unleash on your enemies if you achieve 7 consecutive kills. Unlike the overpowered and very annoying attack helicopter in CoD4, the dogs can be disposed of fairly quickly. However, they can also kill you just as quick, especially if two dogs decide to team up on you. It’s a random occurrence, but it happens. Hearing the dogs barking as they close in on your location adds to the effect. If you’re one of the lucky ones the dogs choose not to come after, you may also use them to find your enemies, as they give away their positions. Other modifiers achieved through kill streaks are the Recon Plane (3-kill streak) and Artillery (5-kill streak), which function the same as their CoD4 counterparts. It’s unknown if there will be any additional modifiers.
Leveling
Although the beta is currently capped at level 11, the max level will be 65 – an improvement over CoD4 – and all 10 Prestige Modes will make their return. You begin with 5 custom class slots, unlockable at level 4, but can earn additional slots (up to 5) by working your way through Prestige Mode. It’s a step in the right direction opposed to CoD4, but I’m personally hoping there will be additional rewards that are unlockable through Prestige Mode.
Also like CoD4, the Barracks allows you to view your stats, the Leaderboards, Challenges, set your Clan Tag and unlock Prestige Mode. A new Lobby Leaderboard option is also available in the game lobby menu, allowing you to compare your stats with those in your game lobby.
Weapons
The weapons are categorized by Bolt Action Rifles, Rifles, Submachine Guns, Shotguns, Machine Guns and of course your Sidearm. Sniper rifles will have to be assembled using attachments unlocked via Challenges. Out of the guns currently available in the beta, my personal favorites are the SVT-40, Thompson and BAR, though I’m really anxious to try the M1 Garand and .357 Magnum, which are unlocked well beyond the beta’s level cap. I usually prefer a bolt action rifle in WWII shooters, but it seems they’ll be favored more in Hardcore games, as it’s really hard to kill with a single shot – even with Stopping Power – leaving you vulnerable between shots otherwise. I’ve compiled a list below of all weapons listed under each category.
An asterisk (*) indicates that the weapon is available to use in the beta.
|
Bolt Action Rifles Attachments for Bolt Action Rifles include Sniper Scope, Bayonet and Rifle Grenade. |
Rifles Attachments for Rifles include Flash Hider, Aperture Sight and Telescopic Sight. |
|
Submachine Guns Attachments for Submachine Guns include Suppressor, Aperture Sight, Round Drum and Dual Magazines. |
Shotguns Attachments for Shotguns include Grip and Bayonet. |
|
Machine Guns Attachments for Machine Guns include Bipod and Bayonet. |
Sidearms No Luger P08. |
|
Primary Grenades |
Special Grenades |
Treyarch have also added a new level of violence, giving players the ability to blow off an enemy’s limbs using explosives and other high-powered weapons, such as shotguns. Bullet wounds are also more visible on player models, especially on bare skin.
And for those who loved the knife in CoD4, it’s back and feels just as good, if not better, when stabbing someone with it.
Perks
There are 28 perks, as well as 5 vehicle perks. I’ve listed them all below.
An asterisk (*) indicates that the perk is available to use in the beta.
|
Perk 1 |
Perk 2 |
|
Perk 3 |
Vehicle Perk |
As you can see, some perks from CoD4 have returned along with a number of new ones, most notably the M2 Flamethrower, unlockable at 65, and Second Chance, which will revive a fallen teammate. The Bouncing Betty seems to be the Claymore replacement. Many perks are obvious by their names, but a few are still unknown at this time.
Game Modes
An asterisk (*) indicates that a Hardcore mode will be available for this game type.
Game modes will include Team Deathmatch*, Free For All*, Sabotage, Search and Destroy*, Capture The Flag, Domination, War* and Headquarters.
Only War, Capture The Flag, Team Deathmatch, Pick Up TDM (Team Deathmatch with no parties allowed) and Free For All are currently available to play in the beta.
Challenges
The weapon challenges have also returned and will allow you to unlock weapon attachments. Also included are Boot Camp, Operations, Vehicles, Killer, Field Specialist, Humiliation and Elite, each with their own set of challenges.
All data is subject to change.
UPDATE: The beta has been updated with the following changes:
- The level cap has been increased to 24.
- Due to the level cap increase, players now have access to the Mosin-Nagant, M1 Garand, Tokarev TT-33, Bomb Squad, Bouncing Betty x 2, Martyrdom, Ordnance Training and Operations.
- The playlist is now separated into two categories – Core and Hardcore. Hardcore includes Search and Destroy and Team Deathmatch.
As suspected, the bolt action rifles are a blast in Hardcore games.
UPDATE 2: The beta has been updated with the following changes:
- The level cap has been increased to 44.
- Due to the level cap increase, players now have access to the Kar98k, STG-44, Type 100, Double-Barreled Shotgun, MG42, Bandolier, Primary Grenades x 2, Sleight of Hand, Shades, Double Tap, Leadfoot and Coaxial Machine Gun.
- The playlist has been updated to include Search and Destroy in Core.

Posted by Skizelli on Friday, October 10th, 2008 @ 4:02 AMJust a quick mention about the new forum. I’ll add a link to it somewhere when I feel like it. It looks like garbage for the time being, but I hope to change that in the future.
